What follows is a sad attempt to re-invent the wheel. The story involves the mysterious disappearance of a housewife and while it looks like just another possible "husband murders his wife" scenario to Reed, Kolchak seems to know more than he should. Chris Carter cited Kolchak as one of his major inspirations behind the creation of The X-Files and Darren McGavin has devoted a large portion of his personal website to the series. Kolchak: The Night Stalker didn't set the Nielsen ratings on fire, getting cancelled after only 20 episodes but it did well enough to become a cult hit that continues to entertain and influence audiences today. Kolchak: The Night Stalker premiered on ABC on September 1st, 1974 with Kolchak and Vincenzo now working for the INS news service bureau in Chicago.
